According to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 8.3% of the population aged 12 and older in the United States were current illicit drug users. In terms of alcohol, 23% of the population aged 12 and older engaged in binge drinking over the past month and 6.9% engaged in heavy drinking.
